As of July 3rd, a new Italian bioeconomy hub is operational in Naples, hosted at the University of Naples Federico II. This strategic center is part of the European project BioINSouth and represents a key step forward in promoting sustainable development in Southern Italy.
A European project for Southern Europe
BioINSouth is funded by the Horizon Europe programme with a total investment of 3 million euros. The initiative, promoted and coordinated by the SPRING Cluster (the Italian Cluster of Circular Bioeconomy), aims to support innovation and sustainability policies across Southern European countries, with a particular focus on the adoption of cutting-edge technologies in the circular bioeconomy sector.
Campania as a model region
The Campania Region was selected as the starting point due to its strong alignment with strategic goals that place bioeconomy among the key sectors for competitive and sustainable growth. The Naples hub will act as a national reference point for dialogue between research, businesses, and institutions, supported by the Multi Actor Regional Group (MARG).
Building a sustainable innovation network
During the launch event, Mario Bonaccorso, director of the SPRING Cluster, announced the extension of the BioINSouth model to other Southern Italian regions. Sicily will be the next destination, with the aim of creating a solid and collaborative network for green transition and sustainable innovation.
