In recent years, compostable bioplastics have been regarded as one of the most promising solutions to reduce the environmental impact of conventional plastics. However, after a period of steady growth, the Italian sector experienced a setback in 2023.

Several factors have contributed to slowing down the development of the industry, including unfair competition from low-cost products imported from the Far East and the spread of illegal practices in the sale of non-biodegradable shopping bags and packaging.

Despite these issues, the compostable bioplastics recycling sector has shown encouraging results. In 2023, the national consortium Biorepack reported a recycling rate of 56.9%—a figure that already exceeds the targets set by the European Union for 2025 and 2030. However, there is a risk that the contamination of organic waste streams with conventional plastics could compromise the quality of recovered material, undermining a significant portion of the efforts made so far.

Restarting with Regulation, Research, and Awareness

To relaunch the bioplastics sector, a multifaceted approach is essential. Strengthening the regulatory framework, increasing enforcement against illegal practices, and promoting effective public communication to raise awareness among citizens and businesses about the importance of proper waste sorting are all necessary actions. At the same time, investment in research is crucial to improve material performance and develop increasingly sustainable solutions.

Bioplastics represent a key lever for ecological transition, but their success will depend on the ability to overcome current economic, regulatory, and cultural challenges. Only through coordinated action can the full potential of these innovative solutions be realized, making them central to a more sustainable future.
