Sant’Orsola publishes its first Sustainability Report: a concrete step toward a greener future
The Trentino-based cooperative Sant’Orsola, a key player in Italy in the production and distribution of berries, has published its first Sustainability Report, marking the beginning of a new phase in its corporate journey. Following three years of strong economic growth — with a turnover of €87.7 million in 2023 and over €38 million distributed to its members — the company has chosen to make decisive investments in environmental stewardship, innovation, and social responsibility, aiming to build an increasingly ethical, transparent, and circular agricultural supply chain.
A central theme in the report is the energy transition: thanks to the installation of a photovoltaic system, Sant’Orsola now meets 33% of its energy needs through renewable sources. This choice significantly reduces the company’s environmental impact and increases its energy self-sufficiency.
In terms of production, the cooperative has adopted integrated farming techniques that use natural methods for plant protection and a more efficient use of resources. For example, soilless cultivation techniques allow for water savings of up to 30% compared to traditional agriculture. Ensuring the safety of the final product is the “Residuo Zero” (Zero Residue) line, certified by CSQA, which guarantees a pesticide content of less than 0.01 mg/kg — a threshold well below legal limits. Notably, the Zero Residue Blueberry was named Product of the Year 2022, highlighting the company’s genuine commitment to quality and food safety.
Packaging is also a key focus, with the use of low-impact materials, recycled R-PET containers, and plastic-free cellulose solutions for the Zero Residue line. The sustainability effort extends to the recovery and recycling of materials used in cultivation, such as peat, pots, and nets.
Sant’Orsola’s sustainability path is supported by a strong set of internationally recognized certifications, including ISO 14001 for environmental management, Residuo Zero (CSQA), Global G.A.P. and GRASP for integrated production and social responsibility, IFS Food for food safety, as well as CONAI and Cycle4Green for packaging management.
With this first report, Sant’Orsola not only shares the results it has achieved but also positions itself as a benchmark within the Italian fruit and vegetable sector, proving that it is possible to combine economic strength with a true commitment to environmental care and consumer health.
“We are building a sustainable supply chain, from the land to the point of sale. This is just the beginning,” say the company’s top executives.
