MADE IN ITALY

Despite rising prices and energy costs, in 2024 the production of Italian roasted coffee almost reached 431,000 tons. A slight drop in volume (-0.6%) was accompanied by an increase of +8.5% in value, totaling €4.36 billion. The result? A sector that resists, innovates, and continues to carry the aroma of Made in Italy.

Italy: Queen of Roasted Coffee in the World

With 10 million sacks of green coffee imported and 5.7 million sacks exported, our country confirms its position as:

  • 3rd largest importer of green coffee worldwide
  • 1st largest exporter of roasted coffee worldwide
  • 7th largest consumer globally

In the first half of 2024 alone, exports reached €1.18 billion, up 6.3%. Italian flavor continues to conquer cup after cup, from Paris to Tokyo.

Capsules, Moka, and Coffee Bars: Changing Habits

Italians remain great coffee lovers: 97.7% drink it, 71% daily. Espresso remains the undisputed king (51.6%), but capsules and pods are growing, now accounting for 23.9% of the market (+13%).

80% of consumption takes place at home, but the social ritual of the coffee bar remains untouchable — also thanks to one of the lowest average prices in Europe: €1.20 per cup.

A Love… We Know Little About

However, there is a curious fact: almost one in two Italians believes coffee is grown in Italy, and only 40% knows that coffee beans are green before roasting. This shows that alongside passion, there is still a need for education about the supply chain and coffee culture.
