In 2005, ordering at the bar meant simply asking for a beer. Today, we talk about beers — in the plural. Lager, Ale, IPA, Bock, Weiss, craft and experimental brews: a universe of styles and nuances that reflects the cultural and productive growth of an entire sector.

This evolution has transformed beer from a youthful, convivial drink into a true protagonist on Italian tables.

This is the picture of the golden decade of beer in Italy, outlined by the Birra Moretti Foundation and the Beer Observatory, in collaboration with Althesys Strategic Consultants, during an event held in Rome.

“At that time we had 200 references on the market — today there are more than 7,000.”

— Alfredo Pratolongo, President of the Birra Moretti Foundation

A supply chain that creates value

The analysis presented by Althesys shows a healthy sector, capable of generating economic value and long-term employment.

  • Shared Value (2014 → 2025): from €7.8 billion to €10.4 billion (+33%)
  • Total wealth generated over 10 years: €92 billion
  • Production: +20.5%
  • Consumption: +13.6%
  • Exports: +31%
  • Employment: +24,000 jobs (total 112,000 employees, +27.5%)

These results translate into new professional opportunities in the supply chain — from brewmasters and food technologists to beer sommeliers and beer specialists.

“The brewing sector has proven to be stable and a generator of long-term value.”

— Alessandro Marangoni, CEO of Althesys Strategic Consultants

Today, it represents a mature, innovative supply chain with significant fiscal impact: €3.9 billion, equal to 0.7% of total national revenue.

From the bar counter to the dining table

The growth of the beer sector is not only economic but also cultural. The Birra Moretti Foundation promotes beer culture at the table, with a special focus on education and young people.

Educational project

  • 39 hospitality schools involved in 6 Italian regions
  • 6,600 students participating
  • Goal: promote conscious consumption and a gastronomic approach to beer

Toward a law for the brewing sector

The need for an organic regulatory framework for the industry has emerged, as the sector now holds strategic importance within the Italian economy.

“The time has come to start drafting a law for the brewing sector.”

— G. Salvitti

A story of value, culture, and conviviality

From the early 2000s to Expo 2015, the Foundation has accompanied the growth of the sector. Italian beer today stands as a symbol of sociality, culture, and national identity — generating economic, occupational, and cultural value.
