Italy is now the top exporter of cheese in the European Union, both in terms of value and quantity. This achievement rewards the quality of Made in Italy products and the ability of companies to meet the tastes and needs of international consumers.

The numbers behind the milestone

In the first six months of the year, Italian cheese exports reached 97,663 tons, equivalent to €968.2 million. This leap allowed Italy to surpass Germany, historically at the top of cheese exports, registering growth more than three times the European average.

Behind these figures is not only the increase in volume but also the ability to maintain a high average product value, a sign that foreign markets do not just seek quantity but recognize and reward the quality of Italian cheese.

The most dynamic markets

Not all countries reacted in the same way to the Italian offer. In the United States, China, and Japan, a slowdown was observed, partly due to tariffs and economic uncertainties. However, in other strategic markets, Italy achieved exceptional performance:

  • United Kingdom: +5.7%
  • Norway: +9.3%
  • Canada: +18.9%
  • South Korea: +40.8%
  • Saudi Arabia: +28.4%
  • Australia: +4.3%

In addition, numerous smaller countries collectively contributed to strengthening overall growth, signaling a demand that is increasingly widespread and global.

Voices from the sector

“Surpassing Germany is not just a statistical figure, but proof that the Italian dairy sector can compete everywhere, maintaining value and quality even in an uncertain global context,” commented Paolo Zanetti, president of Assolatte. This success is the result of constant investments in innovation, internationalization, and promotion of our dairy excellence.

Italian cheese conquers the world

From mozzarella to Parmigiano Reggiano, from pecorino to gorgonzola, Italian cheeses continue to be ambassadors of taste and tradition, capable of combining local identity with international recognition. The year 2025 will be remembered as the year in which Italy not only consolidated its reputation but also demonstrated leadership in the European extra-EU export market, confirming that the strength of our country is also reflected on the table.
