Meta takes a new step into the future of artificial intelligence with Aria Gen 2, the second generation of smart glasses officially unveiled on June 5 and covered by Il Sole 24 Ore in an article by Chiara Ricciolini.

This cutting-edge device was developed as part of Project Aria, an initiative launched in 2020 to explore the potential of egocentric AI—a type of artificial intelligence designed to understand the world from a human perspective.

Compared to the first version, which was used to create the large Ego4D dataset thanks to collaboration with universities around the world, Aria Gen 2 introduces significant ergonomic and technological improvements:

  • Lightweight design with foldable temples, optimized for more practical everyday use;

  • Advanced optical sensors, with more sensitive cameras and a wider field of view for more accurate data collection;

  • High-precision eye and gesture tracking, including pupil monitoring, useful for applications in robotics and smart prosthetics;

  • Enhanced audio, with a nose bridge microphone that isolates the speaker’s voice even in noisy environments;

  • Ultrafast temporal synchronization, using low-frequency radio technology with an error margin under one millisecond;

  • Low-power dedicated coprocessor, capable of running complex real-time environmental perception algorithms;

  • Advanced spatial mapping, even without GPS, by combining visual and motion data.

Aria Gen 2 is not just a wearable gadget—it represents a technological evolution aimed at surpassing the smartphone, paving the way for new forms of interaction between humans and machines.

CEO Mark Zuckerberg emphasized that this experimental technology could one day become the primary interface for augmented reality and real-time digital processing.
